Em dash replacer

Remove or replace the em dashes in ChatGPT and AI text

Paste text from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or anywhere else into the box above, pick what each em dash should become, and copy the result. It is free, runs in your browser, and also strips the hidden Unicode characters that AI tools leave in copied text.

The habit

Why ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini write so many em dashes

The em dash (—) joins two thoughts without deciding how they relate, which is exactly what a language model wants when it is producing fluent text quickly. The models also learned from a great deal of edited magazine and web prose where the dash is fashionable. The result is paragraphs with an em dash in every other sentence, a pattern that editors, teachers and readers now recognise as machine-written. Many house style guides limit the character or ban it, and plain-text systems such as some forms and legacy software do not display it at all.

Rewriting by hand is slow because every dash needs a decision. This tool makes the decision once, applies it to the whole text, and shows you the count so you know how much changed.

Step by step

How to remove em dashes from AI text

  1. Paste the text

Copy the answer from ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, or any document, and paste it into the left box. The counter shows how many em dashes it contains.

  2. Choose a replacement

Pick Comma, Hyphen, Semicolon, Colon, Full stop or Remove above the result. The result updates immediately, so you can compare how each one reads before committing.

  3. Copy the result

Click Copy and paste the text anywhere. If the text also contains markdown such as headings and bullet points, use the markdown cleaner instead, which has the same em dash option and converts the formatting for Google Docs and Word.

Choosing well

Which punctuation should replace an em dash?

No single replacement is right for every sentence, but one choice usually works for most of a text. Try the options on your own paragraph and read it back.

Comma

The safest default. "The launch went well — better than planned" becomes "The launch went well, better than planned." Works for asides and afterthoughts, which is what most AI em dashes are.

Colon

Use when the second half explains or expands the first. "One thing mattered — speed" becomes "One thing mattered: speed."

Semicolon

Use when both halves could stand as sentences. "We shipped on Friday — the team was exhausted" becomes "We shipped on Friday; the team was exhausted."

Full stop

The firmest fix. The clause after the dash becomes a new sentence with a capital letter. Good for long, breathless AI sentences.

Hyphen with spaces

Keeps the rhythm of the dash with a plain keyboard character, which suits plain-text fields, chat tools and older systems that cannot show an em dash.

Remove

Deletes the dash and leaves a single space. Use it for lists of fragments where any punctuation would look odd, then tidy by hand.

The rules

What is changed and what is left alone

  • Em dashes (—) and horizontal bars (―) are replaced wherever they appear, with or without spaces around them.
  • Spaced en dashes and double hyphens (" – " and " -- "), which many people type in place of an em dash, are treated the same way.
  • Number and date ranges such as 2019–2021 or pages 10–12 keep their en dash.
  • Hyphenated words such as well-known and long-term are never touched.
  • A dash at the end of a line is simply removed, since nothing follows it.
  • Full stop mode capitalises the word that starts the new sentence.

Hidden characters

Hidden Unicode characters are removed at the same time

Text copied from AI assistants can carry invisible characters: zero-width spaces, zero-width joiners, soft hyphens, word joiners, byte-order marks and Unicode tag characters. Some tools insert them deliberately as a watermark; some AI-text detectors look for them. This page strips all of them from whatever you paste and counts them in the result, so the text you copy out is exactly what you can see. Joiners that are part of a real emoji are kept.

Questions and answers

Em dash FAQ

Why does ChatGPT use so many em dashes?

The models learned from edited prose where the em dash is common, and it is a convenient way to join two thoughts without committing to a comma, colon or new sentence. The habit is strong enough that readers now treat frequent em dashes as a sign of AI writing.

What should I replace an em dash with?

A comma for a short aside, a colon when the second part explains the first, a semicolon for two related sentences, a full stop when the clause stands on its own, and a spaced hyphen if you want to keep the rhythm without the character. The tool lets you try each and copy the one that reads best.

Does it change hyphens and en dashes too?

Ordinary hyphens in words like well-known are never touched. An en dash between numbers, as in 2019–2021, is kept. An en dash or double hyphen with spaces around it, which is often typed in place of an em dash, is treated as one.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The replacement runs in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
